SAILING FORWARD WITH NEW SKILLS

At MANET Pune, we aspire to offer our students every possible opportunity to learn, grow, and flourish during their course. In this endeavor, we bring many events, visits, and trips to help students learn beyond academics. Whether cadets are preparing for merchant navy or marine engineering, a strong personality and character are essential to excel in the marine industry. That’s why we focus highly on all-round development at every stage.

Discipline is inculcated in every cadet as an integral part of this curriculum. Parade and drills along with hikes and treks are part of the routine. In order to maintain and nurture intellectual development, various industrial visits are arranged in consonance with the marine field. Cadets are encouraged to interact with their peers while presenting technical papers and attending symposiums on related issues and developments in the marine field. This helps the students to remain abreast of the latest developments in their respective fields. Extra lectures are conducted for cadets who need extra support in individual subjects. These lectures are arranged by our regular faculty when the number of failed cadets in the batch exceeds more than 30% in the end semester examinations.

The MANET Pune faculty and team constantly strive to deliver a world-class learning and teaching environment, inside and outside the classrooms.

ENTHUSIASTIC PARTICIPATION IN EVENTS & CELEBRATIONS

Festive celebrations and events help cadets come together and work as a team towards a specific goal. It also breaks the monotony of academics and gives them something exciting to look forward to. We celebrate various festivals like Ganesh Festival, Durga Puja, Holi, and more in the hostel by arranging various programs and competitions to enhance their personal skills and organizing capabilities so as to bring up their personalities. National Maritime Day is also celebrated by arranging lectures by experts from the Marine industry. A blood donation camp is conducted in-house once a year in the month of February in association with renowned Hospitals in Pune city.

Annual Social Inter-college competitions are organized by different colleges in Pune city which provides a platform to develop the personality of our cadets. Our cadets participate in different marine seminars / marine competitions, exhibitions which elevate their technical skills as well.

ROLE OF HOLISTIC DEVELOPMENT AND SCIL

The School of Holistic Development works to build SMART (Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Time-bound) marine engineers through various modes of learning for the overall holistic development. The five methodologies have been channelized from ‘PanchaKosh’ arrangement of the Indian viewpoint of holistic development. The ‘Pentagon’ stresses physical, emotional, psychological, and intellectual development and spiritual Awakening.

From polishing English Communication Skills, teaching foreign languages, honing creative expressions, instilling performing arts, offering spiritual awareness and giving back to the society through social initiatives; cadets emerge with a holistic personality that gives them an edge to be ‘comprehensive global professionals’ in the outside world.

The MIT School of Corporate Innovation and Leadership (MIT SCIL) transforms young cadets into impactful and responsible leaders who have the ability to lead multi-national organizations. MIT SCIL imbibes the practices of nurturing cadets to emerge as innovative global leaders of the next generation. This holistic approach to education helps them to work for the welfare of society. MIT SCIL creates change-champions within organizations by taking them through a carefully selected course of learning sessions to help them visualize, self-acknowledge, and unleash their true potential.

Definition:
What is sexual harassment in the workplace?

Sexual harassment in the workplace refers to a verbal or physical act with a sexual nature, performed in recruitment or in the workplace by a boss, manager, employee, client or customer of a working unit, that is unwelcomed by the person receiving it and has caused the person to feel violated, insulted, and being in an unbearable hostile environment.

The verbal or physical acts with a sexual nature include:

  • joking or teasing with a sexual nature.
  • continuous invitation to dinner or date despite rejection.
  • intentional dissemination of hearsay with a sexual nature.
  • enquiring for or sharing sexual experience.
  • spreading and displaying a nude or image with apparent sexual contents.
  • request for sexual intercourse.
  • unnecessary physical contact.
  • forced sexual intercourse, etc.

Workplace covers any place under the direct or indirect control of the employer that an employee needs to be present or go to in order to carry out work. It includes office and other locations where the job responsibilities are undertaken, such as offices of clients, destinations of business trips, venues of business lunch/dinner, business branches, homes of clients, etc. and also the appropriate extension of the workplace, such as excursions, social activities, staff gatherings after work that are organized by the company.

What are the forms of sexual harassment in the workplace?

Verbal, physical, visual and psychological harassment

Sexual harassment manifests itself in different forms – verbal, physical, visual and psychological. Some examples are:

[Verbal] Two male co-workers are constantly teasing with dirty jokes, even when women are within hearing distance. Their jokes range from being mildly crude to downright vulgar. A female co-worker has tried to tell them to stop but they tell her, “It’s just a joke. Can’t you take a joke?” It is not “just a joke”. Since she has clearly stated that she wanted them to stop, they should at least have the courtesy to sharing their jokes in private. This is verbal harassment.

[Physical] A male co-worker or boss sometimes gives lady clerk a pat on the shoulder as a way of saying she has done a good job. Lately however, the action has become more physical – resting his hand on hers, putting his arms around her shoulder, occasionally brushing against her “accidentally”. This is physical harassment.

[Visual] A male co-worker or superior has calendars and pictures of scantily clad women in suggestive poses placed prominently in his work area. Women workers are embarrassed whenever they have to speak with him in his office and have mentioned their discomfort to him.

He sees nothing wrong with these pictures however, arguing that “It is a free country”. Not when the pictures are indecent and obscene. This is visual harassment.

[Psychological] A male co-worker or superior has shown an interest in female co-worker, but she is not keen on accepting his dates and have openly and clearly made known her disinterest and disapproval. Yet he persists, showering her with signs of his affection by leaving flowers on her table, dropping hints and finding ways to be alone with her, even making hidden threats. This is psychological harassment.

Function of the Cell :

The aggrieved member/complainant shall submit a written and signed complaint to the Secretary of the Grievance Committee with a copy to the Chairman within 7 days after the committee of grievance.

If the case comes under the purview of the Cell, in case of any difficulties, the Grievance Committee shall have a discussion with the Director before a decision is taken.

Function of the Cell :

The Grievance Committee shall consider all grievances submitted in writing by an individual regarding employment, working conditions, eve teasing, and any other alleged injustice done to female employees/girl students while discharging their duties, attending sessions at the Institute.
