DEPARTMENT OF MARINE ENGINEERING

The Department of Marine Engineering aims to train the best marine engineering graduates for the industry. Along with providing a broad-based knowledge in theory, the students are exposed to marine equipment with visit to ships and repair yards. The educational objectives of our Bachelor Programs are to transform graduates who understand the essential requirements of a marine engineer working on board ship. They will be able to apply their theoretical knowledge to resolve challenges during their career. The department trains cadets to communicate their ideas and positions clearly and concisely, both orally and in working. As a result, we create the ability to engage in lifelong learning, necessary for continuing high- performance in whatever career path our students choose.

DEPARTMENT OF NAUTICAL SCIENCE

The Department of Nautical Science enables the graduates to become Navigating Officers on-board on merchant ships plying worldwide. The bachelor program dealing with various theoretical and practical knowledge imparted in areas such as navigation, cargo handling, chart work, meteorology, ship maintenance, seamanship, collision prevention, watch keeping, ship stability, equipment handling and marine signaling. The educational objectives of our graduate program are to produce graduates with good mental health and psychological capacity which plays a vital role as cadets are needed to be mentally strong to be on sailing for a lengthy period. Being a physically and mentally demanding field of work, the department train the cadets to achieve a high levels of tolerance, adaptability and bodily and cognitive endurance. Cadets are specifically trained for ship operation, navigation and hands on experience on navigation, chartroom and simulator given to cadets apart from relevant technical knowledge. Leadership qualities are also instilled during training.

TRAINING SHIP – “VISHWANATH”

The Ship-in-Campus was established conforming to the guidelines of Directorate General of Shipping, Government of India and adheres to STCW/ IMO requirements. It was certified by Dr. S. C. Misra (Consultant appointed by D.G. Shipping Government of India) Naval Architecture and a professor from IIT Kharagpur. The state’s first and India’s 5th Ship-In-Campus facility named “Training Ship Vishwanath” was inaugurated on 26th October. 2007 by Hon. Shri. Ajoy Chatterjee, Chief Surveyor with Govt. of India and Chief Examiner of Engineers. Ship-in-campus training covers around 11: 52 hours. of practical training and ensures effectiveness as well as the quality of training. The main objective of the ship-in-campus is to familiarize cadets with on board ship machinery and systems and, impart an understanding of the working principle of all systems.
