Machines like refrigeration and air conditioning system, various engines,insulation applied on various pipelines and structure require knowledge ofheat transfer. Heat transfer laboratory is designed by keeping in mind allthese requirements. The laboratory contains equipment to check flow offluid, heat transfer through metallic rod, insulators and calorific values offuels. This will not only enhance the theoretical knowledge of the cadetsbut also imparts a practical understanding and a feel of heat transfer andits application on board ship.

Salient features -
  1. Hydraulic bench apparatus- measurement of flow by venturimeter, orifice, notches.Calculation of coefficient of friction for various pipes is also demonstrated which is usedto determine pump capacity on board ship.
  2. Heat transfer apparatus – to calculate heat transfer through pin fin, metal rod which isused in the design of heat exchangers.
  3. Thermal conductivity of insulating powder is used for calculating heat transfer throughboiler walls and pipelines.
  4. Bomb calorimeter to calculate calorific value of fuel is used to decide the type of fuelused in a system.
  5. Redwood and say bolt viscometer is used to calculate the viscosity of oil on board ship.
  6. Refrigeration system used in lab guideline to understand the construction and working ofrefrigeration on board ship.
  7. Reciprocating compressor test rig gives guidelines to cadets about working and efficientuse of compressor for various purposes on board ship.
